Javelin Women: Lu lands shock win with meeting record
Lu Huihui handed the home crowd a shock victory over a field of world and area champions with a meeting record of 64.08m. The Olympic finalist, who has never won a major medal, led by 5cm from South Africa’s Sunette Viljoen after round one when she threw 63.27 to better Liu Shiying’s meeting record from 2013. The four-times African champion responded with 63.60 in round two, but the former Asian record holder regained the lead in three and was never passed. Australia’s Commonwealth Games champion Kim Mickle also threw 63.60 to finish third on countback while Germany’s world champion Christina Obergfoll was sixth on her return to competition after childbirth, two okaces ahead of the 2011 world champion, Mariya Abukumova of Russia. China’s Asian record holder Li Lingwei, thought to be the hosts’ most likely challenger, finished fifth thanks to a last round throw of 62.47.
